Unifor Reaches Tentative Agreement

UNIFOR Local Union 88

REACHES TENTATIVE AGREEMENT

UNIFOR ANNOUNCEMENT:

October 13, 2017

INGERSOLL – A tentative agreement has been reached between Unifor Local 88 representing workers at the CAMI Automotive plant in Ingersoll and General Motors, ending the strike at the plant.

“These members have shown incredible courage and strength by standing up for good jobs and a secure future for their families and their community,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.

“This strike has shown all of Canada why a renewed North American Free Trade Agreement must address the needs of working people first.”

Details of the deal will be released after a ratification vote, time and date to be determined. The Local 88 bargaining committee and National Union leadership unanimously recommend acceptance of the deal

“The membership has shown incredible solidarity throughout the bargaining, and over four weeks on the picket line. They should all be proud,” said Mike Van Boekel, Local 88 Unit Chair at the plant.

Local 88 President Dan Borthwick said the 2,800 members at the plant drew strength from the many signs of support they received from across the community, and from the rest of the labour movement.

“People came by every day to show their support in big and small ways. It helped not just those on the picket line, but those of us at the bargaining table as well. It is sincerely appreciated,” he said.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing more than 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
