One Member One Vote A Critical Discussion

The purpose of this 1 Member 1 Vote discussion is to improve the UAW!

Five active and retired UAW members – WITH NO PRECONCEIVED AGENDA – from different types of manufacturing facilities all round the United States participated in this discussion.

There were 19 question that had been sent in to be considered during this discussion, to include:

1. What is wrong with the existing method?
2. Can we directly elect Regional Directors and Assistant Directors and they elect President, Treasurer, and Vice Presidents?
3. Should signatures be required to be collected for eligibility? If so, how many?
4. What other eligibility, if any, should be required to be elected to the International Executive Board?
5. Should the vote of either method be SECRET?
6. It is 2021, why can’t we use electronic balloting?
7. UAW Constitution, Article 8, Section 25 States: “Local Union action to instruct a delegate does not serve to commit or bind the delegate on any issue s/he may vote on at the Convention.” Should the current system remain, can this be changed to bind delegates to vote the way the local members want?
8. In either method, what happens if there is a split in leadership by two caucuses? We all see the dysfunctional US Congress every day.
9. Should members or delegates be required to vote for a caucus SLATE, and not individuals?
10. How can money be raised?
11. Who can donate money?
12. Who will oversee the raising, expending and accounting of monies?
13. Will a fair election/ethics statement be required to be signed by any and all candidates?
14. What will the nomination process be in either method? Clearly the current method does not work.
15. Currently most delegates hold other elected and appointed positions, If that was changed to prevent anyone who would be currently appointed or elected from running, then delegates could not be threatened or otherwise intimidated (By threat of returning to the line.); thus be free to vote in the memberships best interest.
16. Are we allowed to use any different method of election for national executive board offices?
17. What sort of campaign pressures can the general membership expect to be presented with; should One Member – One Vote be implemented?
18. Does one member one vote already exist?
19. “In my (Large Mid Michigan) local, if anyone even tries to start a second caucus or questions local leadership; the leadership starts shit with management threatening those member’s jobs. They call wives. They flatten tires or damage cars.” Since UAW Local Union already has Direct Elections aka One Member – One Vote. Will the same problems that the locals currently have then be exploited at the International Level?

You too can see how an up or down vote for 1 Member – 1 Vote, that is already the problematic method at each and every local union, does nothing to improve our UAW – Unless conditions are put in place. That also goes for the current “Delegate Convention” system.

We all pray that the overseer and the courts will also understand this vote improves nothing, and will actually cause more problematic divisions in the membership.
