Union Workers Knifed At Union Protest

A Queens, New York labor protest turned bloody after a non-union worker knifed three (3) union workers at a labor protest outside Author Ashe Stadium on Meridian Road…

Labor Unrest At Protest

A labor protest at a Queens work site turned bloody Thursday, after a non-union worker slashed three union demonstrators, police said.

The violent scene unfolded outside the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Meridian Road in Corona where a crew with Iron Workers Local 197 was staging a pop-up protest against non-union work, cops said.

The union brought inflatable rats to the site to protest subcontractor U.S. Crane and Rigging’s hiring of non-union workers to install precast panels at the tennis stadium, said union executive board member Carole Raftrey.

At about 3:20 p.m., a 64-year-old non-union worker pulled out a pocket knife and attacked three union members, all men, cops said.

2017-11-02 FBI Probe Widens To UAW Training Centers At GM & Ford Departments

FBI Probe Widens

Unfortunately, there is more bad news regarding the FBI Investigations into the UAW National Training Center. Reportedly, the probe has now expanded into the UAW/GM and UAW/Ford department training centers. Investigators are now interested in Joe Ashton and Cindy Estrada.

Below is an excerpt from the breaking Detroit News Article.

Detroit — Federal agents have expanded a corruption investigation to include a member of General Motors Co.’s board and the United Auto Workers training centers funded by all three Detroit automakers, The Detroit News has learned.

Spurred by corruption charges filed against a former Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV labor executive and the wife of a deceased union vice president, investigators have issued subpoenas in recent weeks for information about training centers financed by GM and Ford Motor Co. that are operated jointly with the union, sources familiar with the investigation said.

Investigators are interested in Joe Ashton, a retired UAW vice president appointed to GM’s board in 2014, and Cindy Estrada, his successor in charge of the union’s GM department, according to sources familiar with the investigation. Ashton, 69, of Ocean View, N.J., is the highest-ranking official whose name has surfaced in connection with a criminal investigation into whether money and illegal benefits corrupted the bargaining process.

2017-10-13 UNIFOR Local Union 88 Tentative Agreement Reached

Unifor Reaches Tentative Agreement

UNIFOR Local Union 88

REACHES TENTATIVE AGREEMENT

UNIFOR ANNOUNCEMENT:

October 13, 2017

INGERSOLL – A tentative agreement has been reached between Unifor Local 88 representing workers at the CAMI Automotive plant in Ingersoll and General Motors, ending the strike at the plant.

“These members have shown incredible courage and strength by standing up for good jobs and a secure future for their families and their community,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.

“This strike has shown all of Canada why a renewed North American Free Trade Agreement must address the needs of working people first.”

Details of the deal will be released after a ratification vote, time and date to be determined. The Local 88 bargaining committee and National Union leadership unanimously recommend acceptance of the deal

“The membership has shown incredible solidarity throughout the bargaining, and over four weeks on the picket line. They should all be proud,” said Mike Van Boekel, Local 88 Unit Chair at the plant.

Local 88 President Dan Borthwick said the 2,800 members at the plant drew strength from the many signs of support they received from across the community, and from the rest of the labour movement.

“People came by every day to show their support in big and small ways. It helped not just those on the picket line, but those of us at the bargaining table as well. It is sincerely appreciated,” he said.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing more than 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
